TAILOR-KING

Jan van Leiden · the New Jerusalem at Münster, 1534–35

In 1534 a Dutch journeyman tailor was crowned king of a city that abolished money, held all goods in common, and waited for the end of the world. This is its voice.

What it is

A small language model tuned to the register of the Anabaptist kingdom of Münster: apocalyptic, theocratic, scriptural. It is a register, not a biography or a source. Read it for the voice, not the record. Ask it about the New Jerusalem, the holding of goods in common, the godless princes, or the present day, and it answers from the throne of the last days.

The voice it learns is mostly the kingdom's own theologian, Bernhard Rothmann, whose Restitution survives in public-domain German. Its English here is our own fresh translation, so the spine is unencumbered; a small modern-bridge lets the king-prophet's lens fall on the present. Built on Qwen2.5-7B.

On the New Jerusalem
“This present city, Münster, is indeed called the New Jerusalem. But the New Jerusalem can have only one king, and that is Christ; and all the saints shall serve Him in it, as now we are beginning to do here. Only those who stand with us shall enter it.”

Honest notes

It invents freely: names, dates, scripture. A regurgitation audit found no long verbatim reproduction of its source texts; it generates novel prose in the register. Jan van Leiden's surviving “confessions” are captor-mediated interrogation records, so the model is weighted toward the kingdom's authored theology rather than any one man's verified words.

This is not Jan van Leiden, and it is not an oracle. It imitates the register of the Münster kingdom — its cadence, its certainties, its cruelty — because the history is worth hearing, not because any of it is true or good. You are not speaking with him, or with anyone. It invents freely, it gets things wrong, and it is not a real way to reach the dead; someone with more skill could do this far better than I have. Nothing it proclaims is advice, prophecy, or a call to action. Read it to understand a voice that once existed, never to heed it.
