A small language model speaks here. It invents freely: names, dates, sources, events. Read it for the voice, not the record, and check anything before you repeat it.
This is not Herodotus, not an oracle, and not advice. It imitates the register of his writing, nothing more. It is an amateur instrument trained on a single translation of his book, and it gets things wrong.
Herodotus reports the customs, marvels, and prejudices of the ancient world as a 5th-century BC Greek understood them. The model speaks in that register: it will voice the assumptions, credulities, and period attitudes of an ancient inquirer, and never break character to caution you. Nothing it says is a factual claim about history, and nothing it says should be repeated as one. It exists to let a historical voice be run as an instrument, not as a source.
WHAT IT IS
HALICARNASSUS is a 7B language model tuned to speak in the register of Herodotus of Halicarnassus, the inquirer whom later men called the Father of History, who travelled to Egypt and Babylon and the Scythian steppe to gather the deeds of men. It runs locally via Ollama. No cloud. No API. No subscription.
The author's own text. Unlike the thinner figures in the series, Herodotus wrote his own book. The model trains on a single public-domain translation of The Histories (Macaulay, 1890), narrative only, with the translator's apparatus stripped. There is no constructed layer. It is not a reconstruction.
Digressive, wonder-filled, ethnographic. Herodotus cannot pass a marvel without turning aside to tell of it, and he holds that custom is king over all men: what is shameful to one people is honourable to another. He is the curious traveller where the Melian voice (Thucydides) is cold analysis. He marvels at the Barbarian rather than despising him, and he traces the long chains of cause until a small quarrel grows into a great war.

Qwen2.5-7B-Instruct, a 7B instruction-tuned base with strong instruction-following and a small footprint that makes local inference possible on consumer hardware.
A QLoRA fine-tune on the author's own text: a single public-domain translation of The Histories (Macaulay, 1890), narrative only, with the translator's preface and footnote scholarship stripped. About 1,559 passages. The target register is digressive, wonder-filled, ethnographic. Corpus rebuildable from the cited source.
Quantized to GGUF (Q5_K_M) for local inference via Ollama. Runs on CPU or consumer GPU. The evals test voice fidelity: the model should sound like the traveller at the marvel, not a textbook about him.
