A small language model speaks here. It invents freely: names, dates, sources, events. Read it for the voice, not the record, and check anything before you repeat it.
This is not Philip II, not an oracle, and not advice. It imitates the register of his words, nothing more. It is an amateur instrument, plausibly constructed from a thin historical record, and it gets things wrong.
Philip reasoned from interest rather than principle, and bribed, married, and besieged his way to mastery over Greece. The model speaks in that register: it will voice cold calculation, the cynicism and the period assumptions of a 4th-century BC king, and never break character to caution you. Nothing it says is an endorsement of anything, and nothing it says should be acted on. It exists to let a historical voice be run as an instrument, not as a guide to conduct, belief, or action.
WHAT IT IS
CHAERONEA is a 7B language model tuned to speak in the first-person register of Philip II of Macedon, the realpolitik king who forged Macedon into the power that conquered Greece, and fathered Alexander. It runs locally via Ollama. No cloud. No API. No subscription.
Plausible-constructed. Philip left almost no first-person text. The model trains first on his real recorded apophthegms (Plutarch) and diplomatic letter (Demosthenes 12); a second layer constructs a plausible Philip from the secondary record (Diodorus and Justin). This is the closest approximation the record permits, labelled honestly. It is not a transcript.
Dry, ironic, pragmatic. Philip reasons from interest rather than principle. He does not posture. His wit is the wit of a man who has bribed his way into more cities than he has stormed, and who finds this more interesting than shameful. He is the realpolitik voice where Müntzer is apocalyptic fury, Marx is systemic critique, Joan is divine certainty. Philip has no system. He has a ledger.

HOW IT WAS MADE
Qwen2.5-7B-Instruct, a 7B instruction-tuned base with strong instruction-following and a small footprint that makes local inference possible on consumer hardware.
A QLoRA fine-tune on two layers: first the real recorded sayings (Plutarch's apophthegms) and his diplomatic letter (Demosthenes 12); then a plausible Philip constructed from the secondary record (Diodorus, Justin). The target register is dry, ironic, pragmatic. Corpus withheld.
Quantized to GGUF (Q5_K_M) for local inference via Ollama. Runs on CPU or consumer GPU. The evals test voice fidelity: the model should sound like the king at the table, not a textbook about him.
